Engagement Parties

he purpose of an engagement party is to celebrate an engagement with those who are close to you. It is also an opportunity for the bridal party and for families of both the bride and groom to meet each other if they have not done so already.

The engagement party marks the first official public appearance of a newly betrothed couple, giving close friends and members of both families the opportunity to personally congratulate the happy pair.

Engagement-party etiquette:

The father of the bride may raise a glass in honor of the engagement, but toasts shouldn't be the focal point.
Brides-to-be often receive a few engagement gifts, mostly from family members or very close friends. (Party guests who fall into neither of those categories are not required to buy the bride a gift, though it's fine if they choose to do so.) Tradition dictates that presents be sent directly to the bride's home.
The party givers need no longer be the couple's parents - other family members or longtime friends of the family make perfectly proper hosts.
