Beading
You know, the recycle and make something useful theme? One day I decided to make
beads out of paper. As with all my projects, I researched on the Internet.
The pattern I settled on is triangular shaped and my recycle material is mail order
catalogs. After I'd made several hundred beads, it was time to sort them by color, size, quality, etc.
Even hand crafted beads need spacers when strung, as well as wired to string them on
and clasps. I've turned out a rather nice collection that I sell.
Birding
I recently went on my first birding trip with friends. I decided I'd make my
"life list" only of birds I could take a photo of. Here, I'm posting some of my
better photos, that will be updated periodically.
Cooking and Baking
I like to cook and bake and have made up Christmas gift boxes.
Crocheting
Crocheting is something I started in the '70s with the Hippie movement. It's a
craft I'd forgotten about until several months ago. The thing that's making it
fun for me is the new "bamboo" yarns that are so soft to work with. If you
crochet or knit, you should give it a try.
Exercise
Exercise has mostly escaped me for, say the past decade or so. But if I were going to
use up some of my aerobic heartbeats, one way might be like this.
Genealogy
If you've been anywhere around me for the past twenty years you've probably heard
about my project of creating a family DVD, From Stones to Space, documenting with stories,
pictures and music, the branches of my family tree that have been researched. Noting that
my story does not have what I call "full credential" backup, I have made corrections to
some incorrect information that I found. This project is something I need to spend more
time developing. This link is just a short sample of my research that for one branch
goes back to 1410. This is just a collecting place for some of my research.
Photography
I enjoy taking photographs, but only occasionally get some that I think are
worthy of bragging about. My dad was a wonderful photographer and I have over a
dozen of his huge pictures hanging in my home.
Sewing
Sewing is fun when I'm not rushed. I used to do more of it than I do now, but
cross stitching is something I still work on. I can't do anything much smaller
than on 14 count aida cloth.
Soap Making
Well...I decided I wanted to learn to make sopa. After hours of research I've got some
recipes to try and have stocked up on all the supplies needed.
When I get really good at it, my friends should expect to be receiving soap as gifts. And
then I might try to sell some. If there's a particular kind you're interested in, let me
know and I'll give it a shot.
Tatting
A brilliant though hit me that I wanted to learn to tat, a form of lace making
that now many crafters do these days. Again, I consulted the Internet and after
some struggling with the instructions, finally did work good enough to give away.
I'm pretty much stuck on one bookmark pattern that I've done in several colors.
Writing
In 1998, I started writing stories and poems in 2002. My purpose was to write
for myself. But, I had a "limited edition" of a couple of them "published." The
quality of my writing has improved a lot since then, but I still struggle with
verb tenses and a suspenseful plot. I have a very difficult time "harming" my
main characters.
